The Latvian chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry consists of 700 companies and employs 10,000 professionals. Data shows that 76% of all chemical and pharmaceutical products are exported (around 5,2% of the total national exports).
The industry has a number of well-known global players, such as BGI, a Chinese research company that works with genome sequencing, Latvian National Biobank (LGDB) at the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre, as well as several important educational institutions, for example, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies.
On average, the investment made in a project amounts to €4–15 million.
