“Rīgas satiksme” launches electric bus testing

From August 12, “Rīgas satiksme” will test the electric bus of “Scania Citywide”. The bus will initially be travelling on the 12th bus route, but it will also be going on other routes for more complete testing.

The electric bus is white and will be visually different from the other “Rīgas satiksme” buses, but as in any vehicle of “Rīgas satiksme”, also in the electric bus, passengers must make a journey registration or purchase a ticket to the driver of the vehicle immediately after boarding.

Over the next five to seven years, “Rīgas satiksme” will have to replace around 250 buses and change some of them to non-road transport. As previously reported, in March this year,“Rīgas satiksme” invited producers of electric buses and hydrogen buses to cooperate in testing. Currently, “Scania Citywide” and “Solaris Bus & Coach Latvia” (Solaris nUrbino 18 Electric) have offered their electric buses for test trips, which are scheduled to start in the coming days.

The use of electric buses requires new knowledge and experience that can be gained both by continued market development and by practicaltests in urban traffic. Such test trips must make sure that energy storage solutions are suitable for the route network, charging solutions, and the effects of driving habits on energy consumption. The tests are intended to be carried out in the context of ongoing market research for future public procurement.
