Forests in Latvia take up to 3 million hectares of land or 53% of the country’s territory. This makes Latvia one of the most forested countries in Europe. The woodworking and furniture industry is among the country’s leading exporters, accounting for around 22% of the national exports.
More than half of forest products are exported to the Baltics, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. There are many industry associations that represent their interests at an international level.
Products and services made using biotechnologies and biomass are what make the bioeconomy more and more important. Biomass in Latvia plays an important role in energy production. Support for such economic activities enhances the global competitiveness of innovative solutions created by Latvian companies.
