Latvian medical technology start-up Bdetect is developing an innovative device for early diagnosis of skin cancer, which allows quick and accurate determination of whether a skin lesion is potentially malignant. The device combines multispectral imaging technology with artificial intelligence, which allows it to analyse data obtained from up to four millimeters deep within the skin lesion. The company is currently testing its 7th-8th generation prototype in Latvia and abroad, preparing for certification and commercialisation.

Cooperation with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) has been an important stepping stone in the development of Bdetect. The company has received support from the LIAA Technology Business Centre in Riga to secure office space, obtain accounting and software development services, as well as provide salaries to the company’s specialists. “The support of the LIAA incubator has been very important to us – from office space and accounting services to improvements in the device software. These resources have allowed us to develop more rapidly,” emphasizes Ronalds Skulme, executive director of the company.

The Bdetect team also actively takes part the trade missions and exhibitions organised by LIAA, which help attract investors and cooperation partners. For example, the company has participated in the Hello Tomorrow exhibition and Latvia’s official delegations to Germany, where it has gained valuable contacts.
“At such events, you can meet dozens of potential investors and partners in a single day. It is precisely at such meetings that collaborations are born, helping technologies to move beyond the walls of the laboratory,” Ronalds notes.

According to him, applying for LIAA support instruments is simple and the bureaucracy is minimal. “LIAA employees are very forthcoming, so I recommend other companies to take advantage of these opportunities. The first step may seem complicated, but the process is simple if you dare to get started.”
